FCC Nixes Higher 911 Fees For VoIP Subscribers

At its Oct. 25 meeting, the FCC unanimously clarified that state, local, and tribal governments cannot charge the same class of subscribers higher total 911 fees for VoIP (voice-over-Internet-protocol) services than for traditional telecommunications services with the same 911 calling capability, rejecting an interpretation offered by some government jurisdictions that differences in totals should be allowed if a "per-unit" rate is the same.
