At its May 9 meeting, the FCC took the next step toward auctioning toll-free numbers for the first time by seeking comment on auction application requirements and bidding procedures. In a public notice adopted unanimously in AU docket 19-101, WC docket 17-192, and Common Carrier docket 95-155, the Commission is seeking comment on how to structure an auction for about 17,000 numbers in the new "833" toll-free code for which there have been competing requests. The auction would be an experiment in distributing toll-free numbers in a way other than the first-come, first-serve method used until now.
