D.C. AG Sues Facebook Over Data Harvesting

District of Columbia Attorney General Karl Racine has announced his office has filed a lawsuit against Face-book, Inc., for the role it played in allowing Cambridge Analytica to harvest the private data of Facebook users and expose "District residents' data to manipulation for political purposes during the 2016 election." The lawsuit, filed Dec. 19 at the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, alleges that Facebook's "lax oversight and misleading privacy settings allowed, among other things, a third-party application to use the platform to harvest the personal information of millions of users without their permission and then sell it to a political consulting firm." This private data was then sold to Cambridge Analytica, which used it to help presidential campaigns target voters based on their personal traits.
