State Attorneys General Ask FTC To Strengthen Identity Theft Rules

Attorneys general from 30 states and the District of Columbia have asked the Federal Trade Commission to tighten rules designed to thwart identity thieves from opening fraudulent financial accounts or requesting credit cards in someone else's name. The FTC had sought comment on whether to change its rules on the responsibility of financial institutions and some creditors to detect the "red flags" of identity theft and the responsibility of debit and credit card issuers to assess the validity of address change requests that are shortly followed by requests for replacement cards.
