A bipartisan group of six senators have introduced a bill that would reinstate an export denial order on ZTE Corp., a Chinese technology company, unless ZTE strictly complies with a deal struck by the Commerce Department to lift the export order. The export denial order, imposed on ZTE after the Commerce Department determined that the company had engaged in trade with Iran and North Korea in violation of U.S. and international sanctions, would have prohibited ZTE from buying supplies from U.S. companies and resulted in the company announcing it would shut down most of its operations. President Trump, however, asked the Commerce Department to seek an alternative remedy, and the department instead imposed a fine on ZTE, insisted on a change of leadership at the company, and arranged for a U.S. compliance team to be embedded at the firm.
