This book aims to become a key resource for understanding the rapid transformation of China in the modern information and communication technology (ICT) dominated era. It is successful in achieving this aim. As one of the volumes of the China Policy Series published by Routledge, the book explores China's ICT revolution from the perspective of social change and state responses. Most of the chapters in the book were selected from 'The International Symposium on Information and Communication Technology and Transformation in China', which was held at the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom in June 2007. Both the editors of this book, Xiaoling Zhang and Yongnian Zhang, are from the School of Contemporary Chinese Studies at the University of Nottingham. Since the 1990s, China's ICT industry has outperformed its whole economy, which is remarkable in light of the rapid economic growth of China in general. Aside from their economic contribution, new ICTs such as mobile telephony and the Internet among others have changed the way the content is created and distributed, and, partially, the nature of communications in China.
