The vision of ubiquitous ATM desktop to desktop deployment died with the continued evolution of Ethernet. Gigabit Ethernet availability will further consolidate the leadership position of the technology in LAN applications and threatens to forestall ATM's development as a highspeed campus backbone solution. To date the industry appears to have accepted a scenario of Ethernet in the LAN and ATM in the WAN as the underpinning of networking in the future. The billions of dollars spent by vendors on ATM technology and products make it is difficult to imagine ATM not becoming one of the two leading networking technologies. However, this enormous level of investment does not guarantee ATM's success.
