What Should Carriers Do to Win in the Lucrative Data Services Market?

Carriers need to focus on bringing new services and features to market quickly, while at the same time providing superb customer service and performance at a competitive price. This is a new proposition for an industry that has not previously had to respond to high levels of competition. The current overhaul of the telecom industry has created unprecedented levels of competition in all segments of the market. However, with data services (frame relay, Internet, and ATM) growing at a much faster rate than any other public service, it is no mystery that data services is the most competitive segment in the carrier industry. For years, carriers have been permitted to compete with each other in data services. However, until this year, when the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) began implementing the Telecommunications Act of 1996, outdated regulatory practices had not unleashed the flexibility needed in a truly competitive marketplace.
