TD-SCDMA on track for Beijing Olympics

Eight years in the making,TD-SCDMA, China's 3G standard, looks poised for market debut. Last March, three Chinese operators—China Mobile, China Telecom and China Netcom—spent nearly 27 billion yuan (US$3.5 bn) on TD-SCDMA network equipment and unveiled plans to launch a trial service in 10 cities in October. One of their objectives is to provide a 3G service in time for the Beijing Olympics next summer. More crucially, they want to establish TD-SCDMA as a serious 3G contender for the long run.rnWith the backing it has received, TD-SCDMA is set to capture 50 percent of China's 3G market by 2010, according to some forecasts, leaving 40 percent for W-CDMA and 10 percent for CDMA2000 EV-DO.To succeed, TD-SCDMA will have to repel challenges from its longer-established rivals. The biggest threat may come from issues related to handsets.
