Almost one in three western European households had a broadband connection at the end of 2005, according to Telecom Markets estimates derived from trends recorded in the Broadband Subscriber Database. However, an increasingly high penetration rate means that broadband take-up looks set to slow this year after two years of accelerated growth. According to the data, western Europe was on course to have 56.6 million broadband subscribers by the end of 2005, representing net additions of 16.6 million over the year. This was only marginally higher than the 16.4 million net additions amassed in 2004 but far outweighed the 10 million registered the previous year, suggesting that broadband net additions could have reached a peak.
