Italian utilities plan major fibre-to-the-home tie-up

About 10 utilities are understood to be planning to jointly build a fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network in the Tuscany region of Italy that could undermine the country's incumbent, Telecom Italia. The utilities will each build their own fibre network, which they will interconnect to create a larger network that could cover hundreds of thousands of households. Key to the plan is the use of the utilities' sewers to reduce the cost of deployment. ConsiagNet, the telecoms subsidiary of gas and water utility Consi-ag, already offers fibre-based broadband to local businesses and public services northwest of the city of Florence and plans to pass 75,000 households with FTTH within several years.
