NOKIA TAPS TRIMBLE FOR GPS INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

With personal navigation services spreading to mobile phones from automobiles and handheld pedestrian gadgets, wireless carriers and satellite navigation firms are aligning to exploit the GPS-based opportunities. Nokia said Mon. it will tap Trimble抯 intellectual property for use in its wireless products and services. The exclusive deal covers Trimble抯 GPS, assisted GPS and Galileo-based patents, including sublicensing rights. Trimble, in return, gets nonexclusive access to Nokia抯 location-based patents for use in its own commercial products and services, the firms said. 揗ost people are assuming that location-based services in cellphones will start to take off in 2007, and there抯 lots of jockeying for position ahead of that growth,?said Telecom, Media & Finance Assoc. Pres. Tim Farrar. Wireless giants like Nokia are after GPS intellectual property, and GPS pioneers like Trimble are looking to get in the wireless game, Farrar said.
