AT&T said it hasn't set a policy on customer credits specific to the wireless-data service failure Wednesday in the Northeast. "Credit is something we look at on a case-by-case basis," a company spokesman said. He said the problem involved routing of data between wireless phones and the Internet, so voice service wasn't affected. The carrier's EDGE and 3G networks began to crash about 4 a.m., the trouble lasting for about eight hours. The spokesman said that for competitive reasons he couldn't say how many customers were affected. "We always try to use incidents like this to learn from and improve," he said, without specifying steps AT&T would take to prevent recurrences. The problems were confined to the Northeast, he said, declining to comment on users' reports of service failures in the Midwest at the same time.
