Senator Wants to Cut Highway Money to States that Don't Ban Texting While Driving

Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., called for legislation to deny federal highway dollars to nstates without bans on texting while driving. She spoke at the Department of Transportation’s nsecond Distracted Driving summit. Secretary Ray LaHood said the department is proposing nrules aimed against cellphone use by truck drivers transporting hazardous materials. In June, nthe Senate Commerce Committee approved the Distracted Driving Prevention Act n(S-1938). It would give grants to states that ban text messaging while driving and would nrequire the Transportation secretary to issue regulations on the use of wireless devices by ncommercial drivers.
