Most IPhone Users Will Save Under New AT&T Plans, Says 'Consumer Reports'

The typical iPhone user probably will pay no more for service under the new data plans announced by AT&T, Consumer Reports said. Users consume 273 MB of data a month on average, it said. Most use less than 200 MB, the amount of data allowed under the new $15 smartphone plan provides 200 MB per month, and their data costs would be cut in half, Consumer Reports said. Those who use more than 200 MB in any month can add that amount for an additional $15, making the monthly bill $30, what they’re paying under the current unlimited plan, CR said. “AT&T told us those who are approaching 200 MB for the month could opt to switch mid-month to the new $25-a-month plan with higher data limits, for a savings of $5 a month over the current unlimited plan,” it said. That $25 plan provides up to 2 GB for $5 less than the current all-you-can-eat plan. CR’s usage data show that only about 4 percent of iPhone users consume more than 1 GB of data a month on average. “Those within that group that hog more than 2 GB a month might wind up paying more than they do under the current unlimited plan, since they’d be subject to a surcharge of $10 a month for every 1 GB they eat over the 2 GB level,” CR said.
