Carriers Will Be Told to Make Double-Dipping Lifeline Customers Choose One Provider

Lifeline customers who violate the program’s one-per-household rule will get notices that they nwill be dropped from the program unless they choose one telco within 30 days, the FCC told nthe Universal Service Administrative Co. Wireline Bureau Chief Sharon Gillett said by letter nthat USAC will tell eligible telecommunication carriers to call Lifeline subscribers or send a nwritten note “where possible” when duplicate services have been discovered. “We believe nthis approach will not only protect the fund against waste, fraud and abuse ... but would also nprovide an incentive for ETCs to better educate their customers about the Lifeline program and nincrease their due diligence prior to initiating service to a low-income consumer," she said.
