Introduced at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show, the Smera is a cute electric car for personal transportation. Kinda looks like it takes styling cues from the Tata Nano, doesn't it? Up front, there's only one seat, and a (smaller) passenger or some luggage can fit in the back. But here's why it would be ideal as a second car; it charges from a standard electric point, has a range of about 140 kms, a top speed of 120 kmph and blistering acceleration of 0-100 kmph in about 8 seconds. That's faster than most Indian cars! And given the fact that it leans into corners just like a motorcycle, it'll be a real hoot to drive. With a daily drive of about 25 km, you'll probably have to charge it only once a week. Power is via two 20 bhp electric motors, one on each rear wheel and they're fed by a 144 Volt Lithium-ion battery pack. Although production hasn't formally started, it will be available later this year for about US$ 40,000 (estimated).
