Touch Smarts

Giving in to the touchscreen fanatics, the Series 60 v5 touch is finally here. Some astute readers may recognise the 5800 as the same sonar-equipped phone featured prominently in the newest Batman movie, The Dark Knight. Reason enough for me to get one actually, but before we start, a short prelude to Nokia and touch is necessary. The first-ever touchscreen phone from Nokia was the 7700, and it never became final because it had more bugs than an African rainforest. The updated Nokia 7710 did make it into production though, was available in India, and is still available to buy online. It was unwieldly, large, heavy and based on the now-defunct Series 90 platform (also used in the Communicator series). Then there was the ill-fated Nokia 6708, which was actually a rebranded BenQ P31. The P31 was a Symbian touchscreen smartphone with a keypad that didn't allow you to type text!
