In an effort to provide a single platform to diagnose and possibly treat a medical condition, Abhijeet Joshi has developed a multifunctional implantable platform that can incorporate several components at the nanoscale to perform multiple functions, such as diagnosis and drug delivery, simultaneously.Combining diagnostics and therapeutics to form a 'Theranostic' single formulation is emerging as an attractive option in medicine. Implantable theranostic multifunctional systems such as biosensors carry the additional advantages of also being patient monitoring devices which continuously keep a check on the various analytes present in the blood. In line with this philosophy 'nano in micro' approach involves a polysaccharide based micro-sphere with different compartments for assays for biosensing, drug delivery and imaging - all encapsulated or entrapped in a single system. The micro-spheres are created using an atomization technique.
