The Analemma: Calibrating to Nature Our time "measuring system" has taken on a life of its own, bearing only an approximate resemblance to the natural occurrences it set out to measure. The "analemma equation of time" was created to precisely set our clocks by converting irregular sun time to the even, regular tempo of mean time. This is how it works...suppose you want to set your clock to local mean time when the sun is highest overhead today? In theory, local time will be 12:00 noon (assuming you are not on daylight savings time). But the "theory" assumes two conditions: 1) Earth's orbit around the sun is a perfect circle. 2) Earth's axis of rotation is perpendicular to its orbital plane around the sun.
