The intertwined threads of science and empire have been the subjects of growing historical interest over the past two decades. Historians of the French Caribbean have studied the activities of naturalists, medical administrators, economic botanists, and meteorologists, including their contributions to the expansion of French influence in the region. This trend has been even more pronounced for India under the British Raj; recent monographs have examined museums, world's fairs, Deccan archaeology, and Ganges river steamers, as well as local resistance to colonialist projects. Students of the ancient Mediterranean have delved into science, technology, and imperial relationships in the Roman Empire.
