Jacob Holm's plastic-free nonwoven wins Fine to Flush certification

Jacob Holm reports that its plastic-free nonwoven for wipes (SoftFlush) disintegrates and disperses readily enough in water for it to be awarded Fine to Flush certification by Water UK of London(1).Fine to Flush certification is granted to products that pass testing carried-out according to Water Industry Specification (WIS) 4-02-06(2). Jacob Holm, of Basel, Switzerland, adds that SoftFlush is strong and soft, and exceeds the guidelines on flushability specified by the Association of the Nonwoven Fabrics Industry (INDA) of Cary, North Carolina, USA, and EDANA of Brussels, Belgium, in the fourth edition of Guidelines for Assessing the Flushability of Disposable Nonwoven Products (GD4)(1).Water UK says that while there has been an increase in products labelled as non-flushable, there are wipes on the market labelled as flushable that do not breakdown quickly when they enter a sewer system and would not meet the requirements of WIS 4-02-06. It adds that such labelling can mislead consumers, increasing the problem of wipes causing sewer blockages.
