In an industry first, researchers at the University of California Berkeley have printed plastic pentacene transistors directly onto cloth fibers. The "e-textiles" may be used to embed sensing, actuation, and displays into clothing and surface coverings. The process, which is compatible with textile manufacturing, does away with the expensive masks, or negatives, which are normally used in printing circuits on silicon. Instead, the researchers developed a new mask that is made up entirely of textile fibers.
