In Writing Postindustrial Places, Salvo explores the effects the postindustrial movement has on the field of technical and professional communication (TPC). He does this by surveying technical writing in six different "postindustrial places" (midwestern manufacturing, agricultural, and energy sites) to analyze the evolution and change of communications in such environments. Salvo uses aspects of rhetoric such as: kairos, a crucial action at a perfect time, metis, indeterminacy, and techne', a set of methods, to evaluate how these different organizations use TPC and the resources available to them to shift into "high-technology work places" (p. 182).
