Do Bird Mites Bite People?

In late spring and early summer, baby birds are leaving the nest for good. When this happens, the parent birds often abandon the nest as well. That can leave behind a variety of nest parasites, including bird mites. Frantic calls from customers about tiny mites swarming over surfaces can turn out to be bird mites (other possibilities are: rodent mites, clover mites, larval brown dog ticks, or spider mites or other pests from potted plants). The most common bird mites found invading structures are the northern fowl mite, the chicken mite, and the tropical fowl mite. Each can infest a variety of birds, from chickens to starlings, sparrows, pigeons, even some migrating wild birds. They suck blood from adult birds, as well as the naked baby birds.
