PORTABILITY PILOT

By the end of March 1998, network service providers in New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Min-neapolis, and Philadelphia must support local number portability (LNP), the FCC mandate requiring carriers to port calls on competitors' networks. The 100 largest metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) must have this ability by early 1999. On top of that, competition is spurring Bell companies and wireline and wireless carriers to add intelligent network (IN) and advanced intelligent network (AIN) fea- tures—such as caller ID and find-me services—that will further stress the same network infrastructure.
