To help builders make stronger outdoor structures, iLevel has expanded its line of Paral-lam PSLs (parallel-strand lumber) to include Wolmanized PSLs that resist rot and insect infestation. Although the heartwood at the center of a typical 6x6 is too dense to absorb chemical treatment, the randomized veneers of a PSL, most of which are sapwood, can be treated more easily, and the treatment penetrates to the core. Available in headers, beams, and posts, Wolmanized PSLs are well-suited for decks, carports, or overhanging roofs, and they can be painted or stained. Due to the treatment process, Wolmanized PSLs have a slight reduction in strength compared to conventional PSLs, so plan accordingly. Expect to pay 21/2 to 3 times more for the Wolmanized PSLs than you would for a con-ventional PSL.
