Newel placement for smooth transitions

After reading "Tame Tricky Transitions," in your October/November issue, I offer one correction: It is not the trim carpenter's responsibility to resolve the trim details described in the article; it is the architect's responsibility. That said, I noticed that the newel post shown in the article extends beyond the edge of the nosing return. This "outboard" location is the correct placement.
