The study is a contribution to the current knowledge on allelopathic effect of different kinds of compounds excreted by higher plants on forest tree growth. The study aimed to determine the effect of water extracts from roots of six forest tree species on germination of pine, spruce and larch seeds. The experiment was carried out in a thermostat, in Petri dishes. Water extracts were prepared from the roots of one-year-old seedlings of six nursery-grown tree species Scots pine Pinus sylvestris, Norway spruce Picea abies, European larch Larix decidua, pendiculate oak Quercus robur, common beech Fagus silvatica, and silver birch Betula verrucosa. Root extracts had a negative effect on shoot lengths in seventeen out of the total number of eighteen objects under study in comparison with the control. Only the extract from larch roots had a stimulating effect on the length of pine shoots, and the extract from spruce roots caused the greatest decrease (from 25% to 59%) in shoot lengths of pine and larch seeds in comparison with the control.
