Les aspects techniques (problèmes d'application de l'agent conservateur en conditions pratiques) feront l'objet d'essais ultérieurs.%There has been a growing interest in all questions concerning the hygienic quality of feeds in the past years. In the haymak- ing process, the total mechanisation of the harvesting chain has contributed to this phenomenon. With the use of big balers the problems of hay preservation became more frequent. Therefore, a project was started at the Swiss federal research station for animal production at Posieux (RAP), in order to better understand the deterioration processes of hay and to solve technical problems concerning the application of preservatives. The present article informs about the first aim of our study. Two trials in laboratory were carried out. In the first, the relations between heating, microbial development and biochemical changes were studied. The purpose of the second experiment was to investigate efficacy and dosage of ammonium propionate. The technical aspects (application of the preservative under field conditions) will be published later.
