Shooters are going to ranges and training classes in huge numbers. In 2016 the FBI conducted a record 27.5 million NICS (National Instant Criminal Background Check System) checks on the sale of new firearms. This does not include large numbers of buyers in states where an NICS check is not required. Those exemptions are usually when a buyer has a valid concealed weapon permit that serves as prima-facie proof they have already passed a background check.
