The staunch realists in international relations like to point out that international law has no third-party enforcement and that international norms are trumped by national interest. To illustrate this claim, they point to the many inconsistencies of international practice. To take a current example, the Barack Obama administration intervened in Libya to stop a humanitarian disaster but appears to have let similar events in other countries go unchecked.
