In this volume, Argentine journalist Martin Sivak provides an intimate account of Bolivian President Evo Morales, an enigmatic yet inspirational figure whose rags-to-riches story begins in Bolivia's steamy coca fields and ends in the presidential palace in La Paz. Sivak also provides a deft description of Bolivia's rocky modern development, an account which provides some of the book's most compelling moments. Sivak observes, for example, that since Bolivia's founding in 1825, 36 out of 83 governments have failed to last a full year; he goes on to note that no historian has been able to determine the actual number of attempted or successful military coups or uprisings in that country.
