The Franco-German relationship has never been more important. It has also rarely received so little attention from scholars. Too much of the academy is distracted by large-N comparative analysis or general theoretical scholarship; too few academics are willing to invest in area studies or specific country cases. It is hardly surprising, therefore, that word of this book began to circulate even before it was published.
