Michael Ness and Cameron Smith were given the opportunity to update the campus control network for their 2020 Senior Project. The work involved obtaining precise updated measurements of 21 campus control monuments and updating the 2011 Campus Control Network Student Handbook, whichis a record of all the control monuments and their associated data. One of the problems that Mr. Ness and Mr. Smith encountered in this project was that the network did not have enough monuments for remote sensing purposes. So, they decided to enhance the project by adding 12 monuments tothe network. The other problem was that the pdf version of the student handbook was outdated. Hence, Mr. Ness decided to modernize the student handbook by creating an online Geographic Information Systems (GIS) platform to view and edit the monument data. Although they had only 3 months tocomplete the work, Mr. Ness and Mr. Smith succeeded in updating and adding 12 monuments to the campus control network with less than 2 mm horizontal accuracy for each vector, making it a first-order control network according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) closure accuracy standards(Control and Topographic Surveying 2007, pp. 4-3). In addition, Mr. Ness succeeded in creating a GIS that enables students to view and edit the monument data in an online map and autogenerates the pdf of the original student handbook whenever data in the GIS were updated.
