While the member states of the Euro-pean Union have just decided to make the unimaginable sum of € 750,000,000,000 available to support the euro, and there is growing agreement that the states' own debts will have to be reduced, there is also a growing fear amongst the population that after tax increases and cuts in public services, their own quality of life could take a sweeping turn downwards.rnPeople on the other side of the Atlantic have got quite other troubles. An argument has now broken out on whether 5,000 barrels of oil are leaking daily at a depth of 1,500 m from the wrecked oil platform Deepwater Horizon, as the oil company BP has so far claimed, or whether it is in fact fourteen times as much, namely about 70,000 barrels, which are uncontrollably flowing into the ocean every day, as some scientists claim to have calculated.
