Centre for renewable energy founded in West Africa

The regional "Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency" will support the West African countries in breaking down the barriers that have so far inhibited the utilization of alternative energy resources. The centre is a specialized ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) agency located in Cape Verde and started its activities at the end of 2009. These include strengthening institutions and the private sector, influencing legislation, promoting policy development, adjusting funding mechanisms and improving the regional information exchange. The centre's activities are embedded in a comprehensive energy programme, which is financed via the Global Environment Facility (GEF). Cooperation with other donors and the newly established International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is envisaged.
