In January, the UK's Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) announced that an umbrella manufacturer and a holiday cottage owner have become the first applicants for the nation's Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). Both will use the programme to help pay for heat pumps. The RHI had started in November 2011. UK Climate Change Minister Greg Barker welcomed the first successful applications, assuming that this was just the start for a broader use of the programme.
