Aerodynamic PV systems are becoming increasingly available for lightweight roofs. Plastic is also being increasingly used as a new lightweight material for the substructure. However, an important criterion for flat roof PV systems is that they make as much use of the flat roof space as possible. Industrial and commercial shed roofs provide enormous potential for utilising solar energy. However, the flat roofs of these buildings are often constructed using lightweight structural systems with membrane or bitumen roof coverings.
