Estadio Ciudad de La Plata (the Stadium of the City of La Plata) was designed in the late 1990s. The unique geometry of the structure derives from two overlapping circles, representing the two football clubs that share the facility. The main structure was completed on schedule in the early 2000s; however, construction of the iconic roof was put on hold because of the Argentine economic crisis. In 2009, with the resurgence of Argentina's economy and its selection as the host of the 2011 Copa America, construction was resumed. The completed structure represents the first adaptation of a tensegrity structure to produce a twin-peaked roof, and is the first polytetrafluoro-ethylene (PTFE) covered stadium in South America.
