IMPACT OF NORTHRIDGE EARTHQUAKE ON PRECAST CONCRETE DESIGN PRACTICE

The Northridge earthquake did not change precast concrete design practice per se—and this is unfortunate. Valid concerns regarding the performance of precast concrete members were overlooked in a rush to judgment that illogically imposed empirical constraints on design practice: this is all too characteristic of our approach to structural engineering and especially true in the recent codification of seismic design practice.
