Modal-based LQG for smart base isolation system design in seismic response control

This study presents a smart system design to enhance the seismic performance of base-isolated buildings usingnmodal LQG control strategies and smart devices, magnetorheological dampers. The advantages of applying thenmodal LQG approach for base isolation are discussed, including the explicit physical interpretation, simplenweighting selection, and easy controller order reduction. 2DOF base isolation systems and the well-known,ncommunity-driven, benchmark base isolation problem focusing on structural control are employed to demonstratenthe technique as realistic examples. This study analyzes the underlying interaction between structural dynamicnproperties and control forces that makes the modal approach effective and smart base isolation control possiblenand shows the seismic performance gain of the benchmark base isolation system offered by the proposed approach.nCopyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
