Twenty-First Century Sea Power: Cooperation and Conflict at Sea

The volume under review is part of the CASS Series on Naval Policy and History edited by the acclaimed maritime affairs expert Professor Geoffrey Till, and is also the 50th book in the series. Maritime and naval scholarship is a niche area in security and strategic studies and the Cass series is a welcome initiative to address the prevailing sea-blindness and related ignorance in the policy-making circles of the world. Sea power in the 21st century is an important area for detailed and informed scrutiny and this volume, which appears to be the outcome of a conference held by the Norwegian Institute of Defence Studies, consists of 16 chapters by 20 authors (three are co-authored) of different nationalities but with impressive credentials. Predictably, the US and China-the two major powers of the 21st century who are likely to be engaged in a complex strategic contest at the global level-are evenly represented in terms of their contributions to this book.
