The 21st Century Data Center: On-Site or Off-Site?

The decision to build or move a data center outside the company "mother-ship" facility is never taken lightly, and is usually driven by cost, security and concerns over shortfalls in the parent facility. Once the decision has been made to look outside, what criteria will ensure an always-on, secure data center? With the technology explosion of the last decade, many property managers and owners thought they could make big money turning their tired office buildings, warehouses, strip malls and factories into technology centers, telecom hotels and data warehouses. Unfortunately, none of those facilities were built to do the things most companies need in order to succeed today. Even the old central office facilities built by predecessors of RBOCs (Regional Bell Operating Companies)―like Qwest and Bell South―are failing as 21st century technology centers.
