Disk is still the best bet for primary production and near-line environments, while tape is the best long-term storage medium. (Thanks to security and compliance issues, fewer people than ever are throwing data away. In data lif'ecycle terminology, "deletion" has been replaced by "retirement.") Combining tape and disk is popular, with major tape vendors offering storage products mixing tape and disk arrays (virtual and/or physical), and large front-end memory caches.
