Information Risk Assessment: Is Your Data Safe?

The costs associated with information are very high. These are exceeded only by the costs associated with loss, theft or corruption of information. This article is the second in a series designed to reduce the costs associated with improper information management. An earlier article in Storage Management Solutions covered data protection and the possible effects of data loss, the value of data in terms of potential cost to the organization if it were lost, and data protection procedures appropriate to mitigating that potential cost. In this article we look at the actual sources of data loss, theft and corruption and the likelihood of those scenarios occurring. We discuss the risk factors that may affect the safety of digital information and the mitigating factors that should be considered as part of risk assessment.
