Over the last decade, the concepts of recovery planning and business continuity have been increasingly familiar to businesses that rely on midrange systems, LANs and WANs. But it has only been over the last several years that several significant trends have emerged and dramatically changed the landscape of the industry. First and foremost, planning for the eventuality of a disaster or business outage is no longer only reserved for the large, Fortune 500 firms. The small- to medium-sized enterprise marketplace has now recognized the need to protect their organizations against unplanned outages of their businesses, in order to guarantee their ongoing survival. Business trends such as 24x7 customer service, revenue and lead generation over the web, and increased competition have forced companies of all sizes to re-evaluate the importance of keeping servers up and running and personnel working. Due to this shift, there is increased need for solutions that address client-server environments that do not include a mainframe or "glass house" data center.
