Offsite Disk-to-Disk Backup

Data growth in the server marketplace continues to grow at an explosive rate. Storage pundits agree that disk-based data protection systems that exploit the latest innovation in disk and storage software technologies are the way to go. To play devil's advocate, these same pundits also address the issue of not totally being able to replace tape backup due to the fact that disks are fixed and tapes can be relocated easily for keeping on the shelf or sent offsite for disaster recovery and archival purposes. Until recently, tape has been the only truly portable media and has been the archival choice for the industry—despite the increasing time and costs associated with backups and the ever-shrinking backup window. A recent innovation using disk-to-disk technology for backups has been introduced to streamline this process and address the complete needs of the systems integrator, as well as the backup administrator whose job it is to be responsible for corporate data. In order to understand this new method of backup—offsite disk-to-disk backup—let us first quickly analyze the two current methods for backing up data: tape backup, and the enhanced backup method Disk-to-Disk-to-Tape (D2D2T).
