Texas, Nation's Last Inmate Payphone Holdout, Contracts For Prison Service

Texas no longer will be the lone state barring payphone service to prison inmates. The Board of Criminal Justice gave a partnership of Embarq and Securus Technologies a seven-year contract to provide prepaid and collect-call services to inmates in 106 prisons. Embarq will provide phones and lines and Securus digital security technology. The two could gross $86 million yearly, about $600 million over the contract's life, state officials said.
