Strength Distributions of Running Paper Webs

Uniform strength of paper webs is essential to good runnability at printing presses. Uniformity can be evaluated with strength distributions. We measured a number of strength distributions of running paper webs using a special testing device. We found that, of the mathematical distributions tested, the 2-parameter Weibull distribution was the best form to describe the experimental distributions. According to our results, there may exist a weak relationship between formation and the 2-parameter Weibull modulus. However, reinforcement pulp type, basis weight and cross-machine direction position at the paper machine influenced the Weibull modulus more than formation did.
